Every day I’m here it seems I learn something that blows my mind.

I went out 3 days ago with the intention of connecting with someone of similar interests. Connecting for the sake of connecting is something that I have found to be powerful lately. And the best way to do that is to go to places where you know you’re going to speak to people who have similar interests as you.

Sitting at a local cafe I was open to meeting someone and attached to no outcomes. I brought my laptop and a book, to work on my Social Media and to study the philosophy of winning.

I sat down at a table in the corner of the café that had a plug in right next to it. I unfolded my laptop, placed it on the table, and went to grab my headphones from my bag. I made eye contact with a kind soul at the table next to mine.

“Hello,” one of us said organically. “How is it going?”

We got into a conversation immediately. It’s funny what happens when you open yourself up to the universe, opportunities just present themselves, without seemingly much effort.

His name was Parag, and he has lived in Ubud for the last year. Free of the corporate trap, he went to school to be a software engineer, came on a vacation to Bali and never went back home.

This for me has been a very, very, very, tempting experience. (Sorry, Auntie)

I mean really. It’s incredible here. I can live like a KING for $1,000 a month. Not only that, the locals are SUPER friendly, the restaurants are amazing, and the atmosphere is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced in my life. Talk about living the dream.

Parag and I were having great conversation, and there were some things on my mind that were demanding my attention and taking me out of the present moment. I moved to excuse myself from the conversation.

“I ‘have’ to go and work on my Social Media,” I explained to Parag.

“You don’t have to do anything,” he told me.

“What do you mean,” I asked Parag.

“I learned when I came to Bali that I don’t HAVE to do anything. I thought I HAD to go home and go to work, I thought I HAD to stay in the United States and climb the corporate ladder, I thought I HAD to have a job in Bali before I came here. I didn’t have to do anything. Once I freed myself of my own obligations of things I HAD to do, I was open to the things I wanted to do.”

Wait, what?

It’s as Simple as a Shift in Perspective

You don’t have to support your family.

You want to support your family because you love them and you want to take care of them.

You don’t have to pay your bills.

You want to pay your bills so that when you spend money on yourself you can feel happy knowing that you earned your freedom instead of procrastinated on taking action with your issues.

When you want to do something you approach it with a different perspective.

You approach it with the emotion that comes with the action.

When you approach your tasks with desire you fuel it with the fire it needs to build momentum and make magic happen in your life.

The universe works energetically. Like attracts like, so when you create work from a place of “HAVE TO” do something, you create it from a space of LACK, of LIMITED time, of LIMITED resources, so you make up for that scarcity mindset by doing these tasks that you HAVE to do.

However when you create things from a place of “WANT TO” you create it from a space of ABUNDANCE! You have all the time in the world and you get to spend it on the things you WANT to spend it on, so when you create something, it has a magic pull. It attracts other things to it that you want to have, and you create magic in your life.

Have to Creates a Sense of Obligation

Listen though – you’re not obligated to do anything.

I mean really… right now after you read this blog post you could turn off your phone, quit your job, and fly to the other side of the world and go on a vacation for 3 months. Really – you could. It does not matter what your situation is. You could find the resources. You could find the time. You could make a way.

Let’s say there’s certain tasks in your life that you enjoy doing though – but you approach them as if you HAVE to do something. Competitors often have this mindset (myself included). I HAVE to eat clean, I HAVE to do my cardio, I HAVE to get all my workouts in.

Or do you WANT to get your workouts in? Do you WANT to eat clean? Do you WANT to do your cardio?

There’s a distinct difference between wanting to do something and having to do something, and you can decide whether you want to or have to do it.

Take a look at your life and analyze the things you’re doing. How many of those things do you want to do? Out of the things you want to do, how mawny of those things do you approach with a “have to” mindset?

How can you alter that perspective to create a more positive attitude, which in turn, will create better results?

Back to Parag

So here I was sitting across from Parag having a shift in the way that I view the world and I realized something important, something very important.

I don’t have to do anything.

I don’t have to build my business. I don’t have to work out. I don’t have to eat healthy. I don’t have to support my clients. I don’t have to love my family. I don’t have to be a good friend. I don’t have to forgive people, I don’t have to forgive myself, I don’t have to be a good person.

But I want to be.

I want to have a prosperous business. I want to work out. I want to eat healthy. I want to support my clients. I want to love my family. I want to be a good friend. I want to forgive people. I want to forgive myself. I want to be a good person.

The simple shift between Have to and Want to will create a new attitude which will allow you to approach your life and your relationships with more desire and passion. After Parag said this to me I sat in silence for 2 minutes, letting the shift digest in my consciousness. I sat back, relaxed, and opened my computer.

“I want to sit here and continue to chat with you, as I work on my social media,” I said to Parag.
